Why I love John Virtue![]() "In Virtue's case, the more you look, the more you see the paint in a state of turbulent self-animation: dripping and drizzling, stabbing and dabbing, like a feverish sorcerer's apprentice. In an art culture comatose from ironic overkill, he has asked the straight question: what can paint actually do? And then he has set about supplying an unrepentant, triumphal answer." Simon Schama in a review of painter John Virtue's work describing the force of Virtue's painting but also the ultimate goal of any artist. What can your medium do for you? At what lengths can it work for you to get your point across? While I'm not a landscape painter, I am inspired Virtue's ability to take something beautiful, break it down by subtraction/addition to make something breathtaking.
